How to Style Your H-Shaped Body (Rectangle Shape)

H shape in women is defined by shoulders and hips that are the same width, buying tops and bottoms in the same size, but without an emphasized waist and with smaller breasts.

There are two types of rectangular shape. Extremely slim women are considered “model type”. Here, the goal is to create curves and add volume with different folds.

More prominent ladies that also don’t have an emphasized waist, and their hips are the same size as their shoulders, are the second type. In this case, we recommend more basic cuts.

Colors

H shape is lucky to have many possibilities, these ladies can wear everything A and V shapes can. If we want to visually create a waist, we can do that by using belts or shades (wearing tops and bottoms in different colors). Shorter jackets and blazers in different nuances are also a great choice.

H type also looks very good in asymmetrical, yet basic and simple models, or ones with geometrical shapes. These cuts can be a great fit for both extremely thin, as well as more prominent builds.

Skirts

For more prominent women in H shape, all skirts recommended for O shape are a great choice.

When it comes to model type, our goal is to add volume to the hips, so skirts that flare out from the waist or have larger pleats on the waist or hips are ideal. Skirts in a romantic style perfectly suit this body type.

In addition to pleats and ruffles, in sporty outfits, large pockets can also add volume.

Pants

For a model build, we have similar recommendations as for V shape: wider pants with many pleats and details around the hips. The goal is to add volume and make the hips look curvy.

Unlike model build, more prominent women look great in simple, flat, nicely tailored pants in the hip area. Since we don’t want to make the hips look bigger than they are, ideally, you shouldn’t use textured details or pronounced pockets. To visually define the waist, we suggest picking a blouse in a different color from the pants. Belts and shorter jackets or blazers will also help emphasize the waist.

Dresses

This body type can pull off straight cuts, with the details focused around the neckline. A straight dress will also look great on strong-featured H-shaped women.

When a woman is extremely slim, all types of folds in the upper part, around the sleeves, as well as from the waist down, work great. So, all kinds of pleats and a belt to define the waist will look perfect.

*Our point of view:

Since the beginning of mankind and clothes, we as humans have always tried to play with them and adapt them to our ideas of beauty. Fashion is ever-changing and cyclically moving. For example, pear shape was the symbol of beauty during the Renaissance, while the so-called “princess waist” was the symbol of the 19th century (think Bridgerton). This silhouette could complement both pear and apple shapes. In the 1960’s, on the other hand, H-shape was considered very interesting, thanks to Twiggy.

Today’s trends and business etiquette say that hourglass is the most balanced figure. This is by no means a rule, but it is a popular belief that the closer we are visually to this body shape, we will feel and look more confident.

All of the advice below are only recommendations that can bring you closer to the “ideal”; however, if something feels good, we should wear it, regardless of what is recommended by anyone.
