How to Style Your V-Shaped Body (Inverted Triangle or Athletic)

If your shoulders are wider than your hips, and at the same time, your tops are usually a size bigger than the bottoms, you can be sure that your body shape is V, also known as Inverted Triangle, or Athletic shape.

To achieve a balance with the hips, we can visually decrease the shoulders of a V-shaped body.

Colors

To “narrow” the shoulders, choose darker colors of tops, and lighter ones for bottoms. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to buy all shirts, turtlenecks and blouses in dark shades. However, we would recommend it when it comes to jackets, blazers or button-up sweaters that we wear over light shirts or turtlenecks. If you don’t like wearing dark nuances next to your face, you can keep it away with a scarf.

Blouses

Try to choose blouse cuts that don’t visually widen the shoulders. For example, a V neckline makes the shoulders look smaller. Avoid all kinds of folds and creases on your arms.

A blouse can completely transform an outfit.

On festive occasions, when you want to wear shiny materials, you can go with a simple, casual blouse with a V neckline. Choose the length of sleeves that makes you feel good. If you’re happy with your upper arms, you can opt for a sleeveless blouse, and if you want to cover them, a ¾ sleeve length is perfect.

If you’re in the mood for a more extravagant model, try asymmetric cleavage or even a blouse with one bare shoulder.

When it comes to romantic blouses, folds and ruffles should be in the area around your hands or your neck.

Skirts

“A” skirts are perfect for a V-shaped body, especially those that flare out on the waist or hips.

Pleats and creases are a great choice, especially if the skirt is in a darker shade. Generally, light colors will help us widen the bottom and achieve a balance with shoulders.

Different folds and relief textures are also a great way to add volume to the bottom.

Pants

To make the bottom visually bigger, choose pants with details such as pockets, folds, or an unusual belt over the hips. Wide pants with creased hips are also a good choice.

Also, lighter pants will visually enlarge your hips.

Dresses

Since V-shaped bodies usually have athletic, wider shoulders, we should try not to make them look even bigger. All wrap sleeveless dresses are going to look great on this body shape. If there are sleeves, they should be simple and well-cut, with details on the edges.

Ideally, the skirt should flare out at the waist because all kinds of folds at the bottom will fit well.

*Our point of view:

Since the beginning of mankind and clothes, we as humans have always tried to play with them and adapt them to our ideas of beauty. Fashion is ever-changing and cyclically moving. For example, pear shape was the symbol of beauty during the Renaissance, while the so-called “princess waist” was the symbol of the 19th century (think Bridgerton). This silhouette could complement both pear and apple shapes. In the 1960’s, on the other hand, H-shape was considered very interesting, thanks to Twiggy.

Today’s trends and business etiquette say that hourglass is the most balanced figure. This is by no means a rule, but it is a popular belief that the closer we are visually to this body shape, we will feel and look more confident.

All of the advice below are only recommendations that can bring you closer to the “ideal”; however, if something feels good, we should wear it, regardless of what is recommended by anyone.
